Fire Fighting
Dear Reader,
This week I'm challenging you to notice when you get pulled away from the tasks you need to do to fight fires (hopefully not literally).
Pay attention to those moments when you, as a leader, get called on to handle a situation or task. Where is the opportunity in those moments to empower your team? To guide them? To create healthy boundaries for yourself so you can be effective at your job AND whole as a person.
Notice how easy it can be to default to everything being your responsibility to hold.
Now that doesn't mean dropping it back on your team member's plate and telling them to deal with it.
It does mean guiding them on how they might approach it, how they would handle it, and turning it back towards them in a supportive, you can do this and I'm here if you get stuck sort of way.
Remember that our teams want to grow. They want to learn and evolve. And the more we take on for them, the less they get to grow into the rockstars we know they are, wowing us with their competency and how easy they make our jobs feel.
So the next time someone on your team comes to you with a fire to be fought, consider coaching them through it, letting them be center stage and you taking the supporting role. Let them know the key points to hit, what success looks like, and that you're here to support them as they take on this new opportunity.
